3 Heart-Healthy Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are often the time people allow themselves to relax, indulge, and enjoy the end of a long year. However, indulgence can be a problem if it isn’t done in moderation. Holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas are often excuses to make excessive amounts of food and overeat. If you don’t want to put pressure on your heart or compromise your health in any other way this season, here are 3 tips for staying heart-healthy.

Stay Active

You may be taking time off from work, but you should continue your typical exercise routine. If you usually walk to work in the morning and evening, consider walking the same distance at some point during the day, so you continue to burn the same amount of calories during your holiday break. If you want to have fun doing strenuous activities, consider taking the family out for a hike or for a walk in the park.

Avoid Fatty Foods

It’s impossible to avoid everything fat-related at some tables, but do your best to make healthy choices. Many people tend to bring mashed potatoes to dinner because they’re fast, easy, and tasty; however, did you know that cauliflower makes a delicious alternative to potato and is more nutritious. Where you can’t find replacements for old favorites, do your best to control your portion sizes. Start with a small amount of food that’s high in protein and low in fat. After that plate, wait a half an hour before getting up to get some more. You may decide that you’re too full after all.

Don’t Overextend Yourself

For many people, the holidays can be an enormous source of stress. Whether travel plans, seeing relatives, or finding the money for gifts creates more anxiety in you, give yourself a break every once in a while. If you have a spouse, share some of that responsibility between you. Where possible, make the holidays a little less stressful for you and your family.
