Signs Your Child May Have an Ear Infection

Ear infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses, and your child will likely develop an ear infection at some point before the age of 3. Sometimes an ear infection will go away on its own, but in other cases they can develop into a much more serious, widespread problem. This makes it imperative to know how to spot it as soon as possible and see the signs of a developing infection.

How Do I Know if My Child Has an Ear Infection?

When your child is especially fussy or unusually clingy, look a little closer. Early indicators of an ear infection may not always be obvious, but you can help your child stay healthy by quickly spotting the warning signs.

Your child may have an ear infection if they have any combination of the following symptoms:

  • Pain inside the ear
  • Crying and irritability
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Lack of response to quieter noises
  • Liquid discharge from the ear
  • New difficulty hearing
  • New difficulty walking, standing, or otherwise balancing
  • Reduced appetite
  • Touching their ear
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Vomiting

If you suspect your child may have an ear infection, you must seek medical treatment right away. Some ear infections are mild and will heal on their own, while others may leave your child with fluid buildup behind the eardrum and put them at risk of a spreading infection.
